The kolanut is a caffeine-containing nut that has a bitter flavor and comes from the trees of the genus Cola.
It is chewed in many West African countries, often used ceremonially. Kolanuts are considered useful for aiding digestion, and as a remedy for coughs.
They contain about 2–4% caffeine and theobromine, as well as tannins, alkaloids, saponins, and flavonoids.
